Description

UNM Law Professor Series: Race, Class, and Gender-Conscious Mentoring for Supervisors

Date: Thursday August 15, 2024
Time: Noon - 1 p.m.
Credits: 1.0 EIJ

Do you want to support lawyers from underrepresented groups but not sure how? Are you frustrated with the one-size-fits-all mentoring approach? Recognizing that high quality mentorship can enhance quality of life, workplace retention, and the diversity and inclusion initiatives of the bar, this session will provide specific skills for mentoring lawyers from underrepresented groups.

Participants will learn an identity-conscious mentoring approach aimed at mitigating the effects systemic and structural oppression in the profession and supporting diverse lawyers at all phases of their careers. All backgrounds and identities are invited to learn more about the benefits of individually-tailored mentoring.

Speaker:

Associate Professor VerĂ³nica C. Gonzales is a Latina lawyer at University of New Mexico School of Law where she teaches primarily civil procedure. Her resume includes experience clerking for the New Mexico Supreme Court and Court of Appeals; supervising law students in the clinical law program; and consulting on complex litigation, ethics, and due process. Professor Gonzales is proud to have received the 2023 All-Around Support Award from the Project for NM Graduates of Color for her work mentoring over 50 diverse students and lawyers.
